Our Brand

What does diop mean?

DIOP is the last name of one of our co-founders, Mapate Diop. You can read more about him here.

DIOP is currently based around the Detroit metro area. We were founded in the City of Detroit, and hope to return in the near future.

Do you have a physical store?

We do not have a physical store. All of our products are available at weardiop.com with select items available at wholesale partners including Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, and Macy’s.

How do i pronounce diop?

Because it is a very common surname, there are several pronunciations of Diop. We go by "Dee-Ahp," written and stylized as "DIOP".

Diop is a common patronym from the Cayor region of Senegal. According to Wolof oral tradition, the name actually traces its origins back to present-day Sudan among the Nuer and Dinka people, where it is totemic, referring to the Grey Crowned Crane.

Who is behind DIOP?

DIOP was founded by Evan Fried and Mapate Diop. The seed was first planted at a cookout in 2017 when Evan asked Mapate where his shirt was from. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign and completion of the Venture for America accelerator, DIOP released its first collection on September 20, 2018. You can read more about the origin of that shirt and the brand here.
