Covered in prints and patterns directly inspired by the African diaspora, our shorts are the perfect pair for your wardrobe. Made of 100% cotton and featuring a 7” inseam with an elastic waist, our drawstring shorts provide you an excellent way to comfortably take on your day.
The pattern is inspired by Bogolanfini (or “mud cloth”), a handmade Malian fabric dyed using a process of fermented mud that dates back to the 12th century. However, while traditional mud cloth is seen in black and white, our white on blue color scheme is a fresh spin on a classic look.
DIOP is currently based around the Detroit metro area. We were founded in the City of Detroit, and hope to return in the near future.
Because it is a very common surname, there are several pronunciations of Diop. We go by "Dee-Ahp," written and stylized as "DIOP".
Diop is a common patronym from the Cayor region of Senegal. According to Wolof oral tradition, the name actually traces its origins back to present-day Sudan among the Nuer and Dinka people, where it is totemic, referring to the Grey Crowned Crane.
DIOP was founded by Evan Fried and Mapate Diop. The seed was first planted at a cookout in 2017 when Evan asked Mapate where his shirt was from. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign and completion of the Venture for America accelerator, DIOP released its first collection on September 20, 2018. You can read more about the origin of that shirt and the brand here.
While many of our products aren’t designed with specific body types in mind, we think our clothes look great on people of all shapes and sizes. We encourage everyone to give DIOP a try, no matter what you look like or how you identify.
We work with the highest quality manufacturers in Los Angeles, California, New York City, the Dominican Republic, and China to bring our ideas to life.
We regularly collaborate with a number of organizations and initiatives both locally and nationally who focus their attention on a broad range of civic and social issues.
